Mass Star Formation II : The Mass Function of Submillimeter Clumps in M 17
نویسنده
چکیده
We have mapped a ∼ 5.5×5.5 pc portion of the M17 massive star-forming region in both 850 and 450 μm dust continuum emission using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). The maps reveal more than 100 dusty clumps with deconvolved linear sizes of ∼0.05–0.2 pc and masses of ∼0.8–120 M⊙, most of which are not associated with known mid-infrared point sources. Fitting the clump mass function with a double power law gives a mean power law exponent of αhigh = −2.4 ± 0.3 for the high-mass power law, consistent with the exponent of the Salpeter stellar mass function. We show that a lognormal clump mass distribution with a peak at ∼4 M⊙ produces as good a fit to the clump mass function as does a double power law. This 4 M⊙ peak mass is well above the peak masses of both the stellar initial mass function and the mass function of clumps in low-mass star-forming regions. Despite the difference in intrinsic mass scale, the shape of the M17 clump mass function appears to be consistent with the shape of the core mass function in low-mass star-forming regions. Thus, we suggest that the clump mass function in high-mass star-forming regions may be a scaled-up version of that in low-mass regions, instead of its extension to higher masses. 5 High Mass Star Formation I : The Mass Distribution of Submillimeter Clumps in NGC 7538
We present submillimeter continuum maps at 450 μm and 850 μm of a 12×8 region of the NGC 7538 high-mass star-forming region, made using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We used an automated clump-finding algorithm to identify 67 clumps in the 450 μm image and 77 in the 850 μm image. Contrary to previous studies, we find a positive corre...

We investigate the mass function of cold, dusty clumps in 11 lowand highmass star-forming regions. Using a homogeneous fitting technique, we analyze the shape of each region’s clump mass function and examine the commonalities among them. We find that the submillimeter continuum clump mass function in low-mass star-forming regions is typically best fit by a lognormal distribution, while that in ...
متن کاملAn infrared-submillimeter study of star-forming regions selected by the ISOSS 170μm survey
Context. Using the ISOPHOT Serendipity Survey (ISOSS) at 170 μm a sample of galactic star-forming regions exhibiting very cold dust temperatures (< 20 K) and high masses (> 100 M⊙) has been established. Aims. We characterise the star-forming content of five regions that were selected as potential sites for early stage high-mass star formation. Methods. We use SCUBA (JCMT) observations in the su...
متن کامل6 Massive Quiescent Cores in Orion . – II . Core Mass Function
We have surveyed submillimeter continuum emission from relatively quiescent regions in the Orion molecular cloud to determine how the core mass function in a high mass star forming region compares to the stellar initial mass function. Such studies are important for understanding the evolution of cores to stars, and for comparison to formation processes in high and low mass star forming regions....
متن کاملA Submillimeter View of Star Formation near the H Ii Region Kr 140
We present the results of 450 and 850 µm continuum mapping of the H II region KR 140 using the SCUBA instrument on the JCMT. KR 140 is a small (5.7 pc diameter) H II region at a distance of 2.3±0.3 kpc. Five of the six IRAS point sources near KR 140 were mapped in this study. Our analysis shows that two of these IRAS sources are embedded late B type stars lying well outside the H II region, two...
